Ontinyent
Located in a valley between mountain ranges, Ontinyent has a lot to offer the inquisitive visitor.
Known as the capital of the Vall d'Albaida area and with a rich history going back many centuries there are loads of interesting places to visit within the town.
The Hermitage of Santa Ana, which was founded in the XV century, is surrounded by pine trees and houses the patron of the town Cristo de la Agonía and this is honoured during the festivities of the Moors and Christians.
Within the 'Old Quarter' you will find El Barrio de la Vila which is the original Moorish town and dates back as far as the 11th and 12th centuries.
The Moors were banished to the areas outside the town walls by Jaime I during his conquest making way for the Christians to move in. A charming area with narrow alleyways, period buildings and some of the remains of the walls and towers and also chimneys that belonged to the former factories and mills that used water as a power source.
The Palace of the Duchess of Almodovar is currently being restored and is constructed in typical Valencian gothic style and built upon a former Arab fortress. There are original mocador tiles on the covered terrace areas and within the building there is a large foyer with a great arch and impressive staircase.
The parish church of Santa María was constructed during the 14th and 15th centuries and then was enlarged in 1582. The church boasts the highest bell tower within the Valencian community at 71 metres and within the church the Capilla de la Purísima, made of solid silver is kept. You can visit the church which is open seven days a week and also view the Vidal i Tur picture collection, works from Ribalta, Valdés and Leal and also the engravings of the Cristo Yacente and the Soledad de Mariano Benlliure. Behind the church is the Placeta del Fossa which was once used as a graveyard for those that were faithful but were not able to be buried within the church itself.
The Museum of Archaeology can be found in C/Regall, 2 and has a large collection of objects found through archaeological excavations within the region.
Various types of food can be found in Ontinyent including the famous local sausages one of which is like an onion black pudding called morcillas de cebolla, all made traditionally. Visit some of the local shops and pick up the date bread (Arab origin) or the crystallised fruits. Don't miss the November Fair where local products will be available, the show starts on 19th November and finishes 21st. Another date for your diary is the first week of December where the celebrations are dedicated to The Purísima, contact your local Tourist office for further information.

los siglos, hay numerosos sitios interesantes
para visitar en la propia ciudad.
La ermita de Santa Ana, fue fundada en el siglo XV, rodeada por pinares y otros edificios que además albergan al patrón el Cristo de la Agonía, al cual le brindan honores en la festividad de moros y cristianos.
En el barrio viejo encontraran la original ciudad mora la cual se remonta a los siglos XI y XII los moros desaparecieron hacia áreas fuera de la ciudad cuando Jaime I el conquistador, llegó a la zona con sus tropas.
Un área encantadora, con estrechas calles, edificios históricos y runas de la muralla originaria medieval, torres y molinos.
El palacio de la Duquesa de Almodóvar esta actualmente en proceso de restauración, esta construido en un típico estilo gótico valenciano, sobre el fuerte moro. Decorado en originales azulejos de la época cubriendo las halconeras de las terrazas, el edificio consta de una entrada foyer arqueada y una maravillosa escalera, todo una joya.
La parroquia de Santa Maria fue construida durante el siglo XIV y XV posteriormente se amplio en 1582. La iglesia posee la torre más alta en la comunidad valenciana con 71 metros de alto sobre la capilla de la Purísima, dicha capilla hecha en majestuosa plata. Se puede contemplar en la iglesia la colección Vidal i Tur, trabajos de Ribalta, Valdés y Leal, también grabados del Cristo Yaciente y la Soledad de Mariano Benlliure. Detrás de la iglesia esta la placeta del Fossal la cual fue utilizada en el pasado como cementerio para aquellos que fueron leales y fieles pero no se disponía de espacio en la misma iglesia.

Una diversidad gastronomita encontraran en Ontinyent, a remarcar el embutido especialmente las típicas morcillas de cebolla, hechas siguiendo la tradición.
Si tenéis oportunidad visitar los comercios y degustar el pan típico (formula originaria árabe) o las frescas frutas. No se pierdan la feria de noviembre donde se exhiben productos de la zona desde el 19 hasta el 21.
