Bocairent
Just a short distance from Ontinyent is the town of Bocairent which faces the Sierra Mariola, well known for its aromatic and medicinal herbs. The town was very prestigious during the Muslim era and was one of the only ones to hold markets and it became well known for its linen and textiles.
The Plaza de Toros in Bocairent is one of the longest standing in the Valencian community and dates back to 1843. What makes the bullring original is that it is mostly excavated from the rock and it currently seats 4,000, has an open air theatre, infirmary and chapel. Today it still acts as host for sporting and cultural activities as well as bull-fights.
To the east of the town you can find the Covetes dels Moros (Caves of the Moors) which has been declared a National Artistic Monument. Consisting of 53 artificially excavated hollows in the rock they are believed to date back to Arab rule and apparently belonged to the 53 living spaces of the anchorite community.
The most outstanding monument is the Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Parish Church of Our Lady of the Ascension). Built over an ancient Arab castle it is has many interesting features inside including a Private Chapel which houses 'La Virgen Del Rosario'. Decorated with paintings by Parreu in 1732.
The Jewel Room contains the Calice that Saint John of Ribera donated in 1599 which was created by the Italian sculpture, Benvenuto Cellini. The main altar is looked over by Our Lady of the Assumption and the alterpiece was created by John of Johns and his daughters, Margarita and Dorotea.
Festivities in Bocairent happen almost throughout the year, on November 22nd they celebrate Santa Cecilia. With many musicians (she is the Saint of Music), exhibitions, concerts and obviously the odd party or two. There is another festival on December 4th which celebrates the Saint Barbara which is held in 'la Ermita de Santa Bárbara and is very traditional.
Just like Ontinyent, Bocairent is a great place to visit and try the sausages made from pork and chorizo. The desserts are made using plenty of honey, almonds and nuts and these are washed down with the traditional drink Herbero which is hand-brewed with softened aniseed and herbs from the Sierra Mariola.
